Memorable Bonding Moments at the Monde Summer Mamon-It-Yourself (MIY) Decorating Event

As a mom, I'm always on the lookout for fresh ideas in whipping up healthy and fun snacks for my family. I'm meticulous and uncompromising when it comes to quality and I won't settle for anything less. When I got introduced to Monde Special Mamon, I felt that I found a new partner in snack-making. What's great about it is that it is made with real fresh eggs, imported wheat flour and milk. Essentially, it is baked to be delicious!

When my family and I attended the Monde Summer Mamon-It-Yourself (MIY) Decorating Event at Yardstick Coffee last month, we were introduced to an array of wonderful possibilities in turning our favorite Monde Special Mamon into joyful and at the same time incredibly delish works of art!

During the said event, Chef Mitchie Sison shared with us how to turn our already yummy Monde Mamon even more exciting through the art of frosting.

Meet the Super Kind and Jovial Chef Mitchie Sison!

She was kind enough to share an array of tips in measuring key ingredients like butter and how to achieve a stiff/hard peak for our frosting.

Although I found the concept quite difficult to perform on my own, I got so psyched up when I saw Chef Mitchie's beautiful mamon creations! When I heard her say that aside from flowers, moms can also use numbers or letters to make learning fun for preschoolers, I became completely sold on the idea!

Here's Chef  Mitchie in action:

After Chef Mitchie, gorgeous Grace Barbers-Baja, a mom of four and popular blogger behind The Spoiled Mummy came in next. She shared with all of us how to do three types of easy-to-prepare toppings for our favorite Monde Special Mamon.

Her repartee with popular radio personality Delamar, who hosted the event with much wit and class, was indeed a welcome treat.

What made the event even more memorable was when I got to spend the afternoon with my two boys in a super fun way!

Father & Son Bonding During the
Monde Mamon It Yourself (Mamon Toppings) Decorating Event

What's great about the activity was that we had the chance to enjoy our yummy Monde Special Mamon in two ways--with the toppings and also without. We figured that the mamon itself was perfect as it was, considering its fresh and high- quality ingredients. Monde Summer Mamon-It-Yourself Toppings however just brought out the fun already intrinsic in our favorite Monde Special Mamon.

After my hit and miss frosting experience, my hubby and son complimented my “work” and decided to add another layer of several Monde Summer Mamon-It-Yourself Toppings. Before the buzzer went off, TEAM LUISTRO was able to decorate a total of 7 Monde Special Mamon!

Before the event wrapped up, the staff surprised all the blogger moms by giving us our very own mamon especially decorated by our respective kids.

And that’s not all. Our kids and hubbies were even recorded on screen saying the sweetest things about us! I think all of us moms were teary-eyed right at that point!

The event ended on an even higher note when we were allowed to take home our mamon creations. My son and I were so ecstatic about our Monde Summer Mamon-It-Yourself creations that we can’t help but devour each other’s super yummy mamon!

Just can't get enough of Monde Summer Mamon-It-Yourself (MIY)

Before the activity ended, I was surprised when blogger moms like me received truckloads of gifts from Monde such as the ones I was holding.

Thank you Monde Nissin and Nuffnang Philippines!

I can’t help but make an audible gasp of excitement when I opened the huge box and saw the following goodies!

Oh! I can’t wait to get home and do another Mamon-It-Yourself Activitywith my two boys!

Still bursting with excitement from the previous day’s event, I invited my nephew Stephen to join me and bebe Tutapel in our version of the Monde Summer Mamon-It-Yourself Activity the following day. Stephen and Tutapel can’t get enough of the already yummy Monde Special Mamon even without the toppings. But their enthusiasm was raised up a notch when they tasted the Monde Mamon overflowing with an array of special toppings!

Their Monde Summer Mamon-It-Yourself creations were screaming FUN and DELICIOUS from afar! And when we finally sank our teeth into them, we can’t help but smile while devouring each one of them.

Where To Buy Boracay's Famous Calamansi Muffins

Boracay's Calamansi Muffins. Local celebs have tweeted about and even instagrammed them to the point that these baked goodies have landed in just about anyone's must-try list.

During our family's most recent trip to Boracayhowever, we discovered that the "real" challenge was where to find these famous sweet 'n' sour creations. Chin Smiley

In search of Boracay's Famous Calmansi Muffins

We walked from Stations 1 to and back again, asked some locals along the way sometimes with no success, before we finally connected the dots and tracked these muffins down. Tito U and N arrived at the infamous place first, only to find out that there weren't enough of these popular baked goodies left.

Real Coffee & Tea Cafe Boracay's Famous Calamansi Muffins

It turned out that Real Coffee & Tea Cafe, the place who makes these bestsellers, was about to close when our family arrived. Thankfully, Tito U and N  have managed to save one last muffin for me and Bala.

So what did our family think about these famous goodies?

Before indulging in them, thoughts like, "these muffins better be good"  resonated among all of us. Smiling Smiley Face As far as taste was concerned, the baked creations did receive polarizing views. Some thought that the muffins weren't worth all the effort and they tasted like Cerelac, which was less-than-complimentary. I, on the other hand, thought that it was nice since I like anything citrusy; but it lacked the yum factor that I seriously expected.

Real Coffee & Tea Cafe Boracay's Famous Calamansi Muffins

Any which way, Real Coffee & Tea Cafe deserves a do over  if ever we find ourselves back in Boracay. Who knows we might even come to appreciate the calamansi muffins more if we pair them with a hot cuppa java?

Thinking of getting some of these famous baked goodies for yourself?

Make sure that you place your order at least 24 hours before claiming them because the muffins are really in high-demand. Smiling Smiley Face

Mid-Year 2014 Enrollment Commences at The UP College of Music Extension Program!

I consider myself blessed to have met some of the most musically gifted people both here and abroad, as a former announcer/producer of 98.7 DZFE-The Master's Touch- the country's only classical music station. To this day, I can't help but get starstruck whenever I remember all the interviews I've been privileged to conduct.

Aside from that, I was also surrounded by equally-gifted friends during my college days who served as inspiration for my own musical pursuits, though amateurish by nature. Smiling Smiley Face

We all went to the UP College of Music Extension Program (UP CMEP)to study Voice, Reading Solfege and Music Theory for a few semesters before my friends decided to apply either for the Bachelor of Music Degree or Certificate Program. I, on the other hand, didn't pursue it as a course because I've always known my musical abilities were not up to par with the rest of them.

Any which way, we've come to believe that the UP CMEP is a great venue to cultivate your musical talent regardless on whether you want to pursue it as a would-be profession or not.

In essence, the UP College of Music Extension Program is a non-degree program of study that offers a set of music courses with the goal of providing comprehensive  musicianship for youth, adults, musicians and music educators, who are not officially enrolled in the College of Music degree offerings. The program develops musicianship skills through one-on-one learning (or in a classroom type of setting) of music instruments and other related areas of music experience such as the following:
  • Piano, Jazz, Strings, Voice & Dance (Ballet), Winds & Percussion, Music Composition, Choral Conducting, Choral Arranging, Orchestration, Creative Music Experiences for Children, Songwriting, Reading Solfege and Music Theory.

Here are the different major instruments and areas of concentration being offered by the UP CMEP alongside their semestral fees:

Fees Based on School Year 2013-2014

The great thing is, even our kids as young as 4 years old can enroll in the highly popular Creative Music Experiences for Children course alongside other sessions in their musical instruments of choice.

Registration for the 1st semester (2014-2015) will be from June 16 to 20, 2014 ( Monday to Friday), 9-11:30 AM and 1-3:30 PM only at the UP CMEP office at the UP College of Music (Abelardo Hall).

Classes start June 21st for Saturday classes and on the 23rd of June for weekday sessions.

After joining the Jollibee Kids Club Talent Camp a few weeks ago, Tutapel became part of yet another workshop, this time from its rival franchise McDonald's. I'm referring to none other than the iconic Kiddie Crew Workshop which has been a regular summer activity for kids from 5 to 12 years old for more than two decades.

I wanted Tutapel to enter this particular workshop not only to meet new friends but also to expose him to the value of discipline all coiled up in a fun way.

How To Avail National Bookstore's Back To School Promos

After buying Tutapel's notebooks from school, we were given yet another list of supplies to purchase outside. We opted for National Bookstore which seems tobe a popular choice for parents, mainly because of its wide array of product lines to choose from. One particular brand that takes my fancy is BEST BUY which I think, has successfully merged two important elements: Good Quality and Affordability.

It also doesn't hurt to hear my voice while shopping most especially when my two boys say, "That's Mama!"  I can't help but smile with pride since I recorded my voice-overs from my very own home studio! Thanks James a.k.a. Kevin B for this opportunity!

In fact, I've just recorded another batch of  Back to School Promos for National Bookstore Radio.

Whenever I hear the word Figaro, I can't help but think about Mozart's comic opera The Marriage of Figaro. Blame it on my first ever job as radio announcer of 98.7 DZFE-The Master's Touch- the only classical music radio station in the country. Somehow I've never really gotten over my love affair with classical music so much so that I've learned to just live with it. Smiling Smiley Face

Some things are really worth cherishing and I feel that another figaro, the Figaro Coffee Company in particular, is worth keeping in my list of fave spots. I admit it. At first I might have been influenced a little (okay, maybe a lot) by how much Patrick Dempsey's character in the film Made of Honor, gushed about the cafe. After trying it a couple of times, I can't help but feel the same way.

All You Can Eat @ Figaro

I've recently discovered that Figaro Coffee Company now offers an ALL YOU CAN EAT DINNER PROMO for just Php 299 to cater to Pinoys' endless fascination with buffet-style dining.

"Making Things Happen" Anthem Lives On Even With The Culmination of The 2014 McDonald's Kiddie Crew Workshop!

Summer maybe officially over but the McDonald's Kiddie Crew Vision of "Making Things Happen" lives on!

It was my son's first time to join the Kiddie Crew and attend the Grand Graduation as well. The culminating event was designed primarily to be a mini-fair of impressive proportions unequalled to this day, by rival fast food franchises.

Kiddie Crew Grand Graduation 2014 at the World Trade Center Manila

Upon entering the World Trade Center Manila, we saw several life-sized standees not only of our fave McDo characters but also an array of our beloved community helpers. At first, we were clueless about their presence but later during the programme itself, we understood the reason why.

Kiddie Crew Grand Graduation 2014 at the World Trade Center Manila

To my son's surprise, I gave him a pop quiz about the standees' names in both English and Filipino. He  happily indulged his mother for a while before he ran to his fave, that of a soldier or "sundalo" in the vernacular.

Though the obstacle course lasted for only a few seconds, clearly it was Tutapel's fave booth in the fair. (For better quality, please switch to 720 HD by clicking the gear button).

The fairlike quality of the Mcdo Kiddie Crew Graduation reminded me a lot of the EH Pink Fair organized by Korean cosmetic giant, Etude House, a few years back.

For obvious reasons, McDonald's passed up the pink theme in favor of its signaturered, yellow and orange colors. (Stars over you. Mama said, Papa said, I love you!) Smiling Smiley Face

A number of companies were there to promote specific products geared towards school-aged kids.

When I heard that our fave book publisher Adarna House was also present at the event, my son and I searched high and low; but to no avail. Oh My Smiley

Several minutes before the programme, we seated ourselves near the entrance while hubby Bala and my nephew Chix exchanged our meal vouchers.

A few minutes after, the room became pitch-black and the stage started glowing in hues of red and blue signalling the start of the programme. (For better quality, please switch to 720 HD by clicking the gear button).

Right after this Cirque de Soleil-Let It Go inspired production number, Ms. Jackie Lou Blanco gave an equally impressive performance alongside a plethora of talented dancers.

Still a few minutes later, Ms. Jackie introduced his co-host for the duration of the event, popular Broadcast Journalist, Atom Araullo.

As a fitting development, Ronald McDonald went on stage and exchanged a cycle of friendly banter with the hosts as well as the rest of the McDo gang.

Film/TV actress, Ms. Dimples Romana was also called in to share with the public how much her daughter enjoyed being part of the 2014 McDo Kiddie Crew Workshop.

At one point, live acts of the community helpers took center stage so that they can share with the kids, about their specific job description.

My son's short stint at the McDonald's Kiddie Crew Workshop  exposed him to the values of TEAMWORK, RESPONSIBILITY, DISCIPLINE, HARDWORK AND SHARING-all presented in a FUN way!

Of Maestro Fernando Sena's Art Workshop For Kids & Other Fun Sessions Inside UP Diliman

A couple of months before our Boracay escapade and Tutapel's Summer Workshops, my family and I have already spent a considerable amount of time hanging out at UP Diliman, mainly for Tutapel's grueling Twenty-two 1 hour tutorial sessions.

"UP Naming Mahal" in full bloom during the summer!

Although things didn't turn out the way we wanted them to be, we were still immensely thankful for a number of reasons:

1st:  Tutapel became a confident Tagalog speaker in about three months since he started.
2nd: We found out that he had difficulty in comprehending classifications, and in turn, started addressing this issue more aggressively.
3rd: We also discovered that he was very good in sequencing and patterns which somehow signified his natural inclination toward Reading and Math.
4th:  We got the chance to tour Tutapel around our alma mater while telling him stories about my college life and his Tita Nene's as well as his Dada's journey through Graduate School.
5th:    We were able to have a hearty serving of Rodic's signature Tapsilog dish to our hearts' content. :-)

Lastly, I discovered what looked like five note-worthy workshops regularly conducted inside the UP Diliman campus at certain times of the year.

Here are they:

Offered all year long, the UP CMEP offers Recorder lessons for kids as young as 5 years old to develop skills in note-reading, ear-training and musicality. If you are interested in studying other types of instruments and specializations, please click this.

UP COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Offered every summer to 5 year olds to incoming Grade 3 kids, participants will be trained in Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Arts, Music & Movement sort of in the UPIS (UP Integrated School)-way since most UPIS teachers come from UP Educ.

With power outages hitting the metro and nearby provinces, parents and students resort to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, for the latest announcements regarding class suspensions.

Five hours ago, the Department of Education (DepEd) has issued a list of areas where class suspensions will still be enforced due to the devastating effects of Typhoon Glenda.

Here's the #WalangPasokList for tomorrow, July 17, 2014.

In the meantime, ABS-CBN News.com has mentioned certain schools, colleges and universities that have declared a similar announcement with some institutions extending class suspensions until Friday, July 18.

Why I'm In Love with Nature Republic 92% Aloe Vera Soothing Gel & Cleansing Gel Foam! ♪♪♪♪

$

Although I found Tony Moly Floria Nutra-Energy Essence an above-average skin care product, I decided to shift to a more affordable alternative after using it all up.

It was then that I remembered being introduced to a relatively inexpensive aloe vera product from Nature Republic almost 32 weeks ago. It was hard to miss for my niece Kristina was raving about it and I couldn't quite put it down until I shared it on Instagram.

During a visit to Nature Republic a couple of months ago, I discovered that a number of their clients have also embraced NR's 92% Aloe Vera Soothing Gel as well as its other siblings from the Aloe Vera line.

Nature Republic Haul

It was rather timely not only to see the rave-worthy moisturizer but also its closest kin- a cleansing gel foam which claims to double as a make-up remover as well. I had my doubts of course, but I decided to put both the Aloe Vera cleanser and soothing gel for a test drive. After using both products for two months, here are some of my ruminations and eventual ratings.

Nature Republic's 92% Aloe Vera Soothing Gel & Cleansing Gel Foam

Nature Republic 92% Aloe Vera Soothing Gel

I've been quite acquainted with aloe vera or sabila in the vernacular, during my growing up years in the late seventies. Tasked with putting aloe sap on my dad's scalp to spur hair re-growth, my routine included cutting enough thorny stems to satisfy our thrice a week ritual.

If you've also found a certain affinity with the aloe plant and its derivatives, then you'll find Nature Republic's cosmetic counterpart has a much toned down scent and a less gooey texture.

Nature Republic's 92% Aloe Vera Soothing Gel (Php 245)

As a facial moisturizer, I'm rather satisfied that the Aloe Vera Soothing Gel has lived up to its name. It did soothe my dull skin beset by breakouts caused by using a popular local moisturizer. In less than a week of using the Aloe Gel, once in the morning and once at night, I was ecstatic to see my zits disappearing bit by bit. My joy was real and I can't stop being amazed by this terrific product!

Despite its zit-busting wonders however, I wasn't expecting any age-defying effects for the product itself didn't claim such things. But I did notice the fine lines on my forehead were somehow lessened and my over-all facial skin has improved its elasticity.

When it comes to skin whitening, I did not notice any improvement at all. The tiny freckles around my cheeks were still there including the blackheads around my nose and chin.

But still, I can't help but rave about the product's versatility! It didn't only work as a facial moisturizer but a leave-on mask as well. The aloe gel also did wonders as a hair styling product if you can believe it. It made my hair a lot straighter after massaging just a teaspoonful of aloe gel into damp hair. Although it didn't make my hair shinier, the addition of a few drops of cuticle coat like Citre Shine or Vitress did the trick!

For just Php 245 a tub, Nature Republic's 92% Aloe Vera Gel deserves a superior rating of 4 musical notes out of 5.

Nature Republic Cleansing Gel Foam

Skeptical might be the best word to describe my reaction when I was first told that this particular cleansing gel doubles as a make-up remover as well. If you're a make-up junkie, then most probably you've invested in a good cleansing oil for you're perfectly aware that a simple cleanser won't be enough to remove stubborn make-up.

Nature Republic's Aloe Vera Cleansing Gel Foam (Php 245)

I didn't have any choice but to put my faith in this cleansing gel for I've also run out my favorite Kanebo Freshel Cleansing Oil.

Once I've squeezed the gel out of the tube, its critical thickness was truly unmistakable. As I pursued to make a lather, the scent emitted was refreshingly clean and the foam, admirably thick. Although I've been told countless times that a cleanser's foam levels don't have a direct correlation to its actual cleansing properties, I still want my cleanser to be foamy. Period.

On my first try, I was able to remove my make-up base and foundation without much effort. I can say the same thing with my mascara and eyeliner but what I wasn't able to tolerate during the process was the unbearable sting in the eyes!

Despite this glitch, I'm still willing to give Nature Republic's Aloe Vera Cleansing Gel Foam a well-deserved 4 musical notes out of 5 because of the following criteria:

Parenting, Part 2

During my stint as a magazine writer (2002-2005), I was tasked to do a story about the plight of grandparents at the time. What I realize now is that my interviewees might have aged since its publication, but grandmas and grandpas here in the Philippines have remained pretty much the same. They still love their grandchildren to bits and dote on them to the point that they've become important figures in their grandkids' lives.

Maybe quite unheard of in other countries, is that Pinoy grandparents in particular are not only involved in childcare but are also actively contributing to their grandkids' growing financial needs. What's worth mentioning is that instead of regarding such responsibility as an unnecessary burden, Pinoy grandparents view this unusual development as an energizing factor in their old age.

This particular Pinoy tradition though has received polarizing views throughout the years, with some sectors finding it hard to understand why instead of enjoying retirement, grandparents are still beset with problems in raising their grandchildren.

Whichever school of thought you're coming from, it is undeniable that Pinoy grandparents are truly in a class all their own! It's simply amazing how they've never ceased to inspire us with their unconditional love and sacrificial giving all their lives.

Here's a second look at my article first seen on Health Today Magazinea decade since publication.

Parenting, part 2

Many seniors are taking a second turn at parenting. Here's how to perform the parenting encore with aplomb. By Kaye Langit-Luistro

"All my worries seem to vanish whenever my 3-year old grandson calls me Lola," says Lydia, a 64-year-old retired nurse. "I'm also elated when he compliments my cooking and shares his food with me."

Lydia is one of the approximately 75 percent of Asians over the age of 60 who have grandchildren. Most grandparents start playing this title role between 49 and 53 years. However, because of the increased teen pregnancy rate, more and more parents are becoming grandparents much, much earlier-sometimes in their 30s.

Aside from taking care of her grandson, Lydia makes sure that her 90-year-old mother receives all the love and attention she needs. She also nurses her husband who is undergoing hemodialysis twice a week. Despite her grueling schedule, Lydia makes time to bathe her grandson and 1 year-old granddaughter almost everyday, change their clothes and even give them medicines.

"You can't expect their nanny to do everything," she says. "If you want to be certain that everything's done right, you must do them yourself."

LEARN FROM PAST MISTAKES

Lydia makes sure her house rules are consistent with the wishes of his grandson's parents. "Anything I do with and for my grandchild, I consult first with his parents."

Some grandparents withhold vital information about their grandchildren from the parents. Family and relationship experts, however, believe that this practice undermines the relationships among the parties concerned. This is one of the reason why a majority of parents never seem to appreciate grandparents'way of raising their children.

Nancy doesn't keep secrets from his grandson's parents and never asks her grandson to lie for her. Grandma Celing, on the other hand, is very cautious when it comes to giving her daughter childcare and parenting advice. Instead, Celing works as a "team player," and foster openness and understanding in the family.

Celing discovered that the bond she has with her grandchildren is very different from that between her and her children. Her advice to other grandparents: "Learn from the mistakes you made when you were raising your children and try not to make them with your grandchildren."

HAVE FUN

Laugh a lot, have fun, says Nancy. "Don't feel embarrassed to express how happy and excited you are about being with your grandchildren."

Plan games and activities with their parents ahead of time so that come playtime, you will not run out of ideas, advises Nancy. Lydia asks her grandson what he wants to do and gives careful thought on how appropriate the activity is to his age before they begin. Pete Galvez, coordinator of The Yogurt Company, a support group for senior citizens based in Metro Manila, found out that his two grandchildren enjoy watching stage plays and concerts.

"Giving children choices increases their self-confidence and is a great training tool for them," says Lydia.

PRECIOUS TIME

Although it is difficult to turn down your grandchildren's requests, grandparents must learn to say "no" whenever necessary, Celing stresses. Children must learn the value of obedience and self control. Celing says she wants to prepare her grandchildren for the real world where wanting doesn't necessarily mean getting.

Nancy also believes that grandparents should not use presents to win their grandparents' affections. "Gifts are more meaningful when they are unexpected." Gifts don't have to cost a lot. Research shows that "time together" is the best gift you can give to your grandchildren.

For Celing, being a grandparent is a privilege. "It offers many of the joys of being a parent without the daily responsibilities and struggles of parenting."

Stop Those Nosebleeds!

Five tips for first aid relief. By Kaye Langit-Luistro

With these supposedly cooler months still searing hot on some days, it'll just be a matter of time when your little boy or girl gets a nosebleed, especially if you or other members of your family were prone to nosebleeds during your youth.

Nosebleeds in both adults and children are caused by a number of factors including localized infections, dried nasal mucus membranes, arteriosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries), high blood pressure, certain disorders that lead to bleeding of the nose (such as leukemia, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia or dengue hemorrhagic fever) and injury (nose fractures or repeated injury from constant picking.) Low humidity on days that are hot and dry can dry out the nasal cavities and also lead to nosebleeds.

Most nosebleeds are not serious and can be stopped in 10 or 15 minutes without hospital treatment. However, if your child's nosebleed crops up every month without any substantive reason, according to pediatrician Lourdes Dolojan, MD, consult your physician right away. This will help you explore options before it truly becomes unmanageable.

Stop Those Nosebleeds by Kaye Langit-Luistro
Prevention Philippines, December 2002

For easy to follow first-aid techniques, says Dr. Dolojan, "just remember the acronym TAP-D2."

Tilt your child's head forward and not backward to avoid blocking the airway.

Apply ice packs on the side of the nose bridge to ease pain and prevent swelling.

Pinch the soft part of the nose below the nasal bone from 10 to 15 minutes.

Dash to your nearest health practitioner and seek medical attention if bleeding persists.

Do not put any nasal pack (made of sterilized gauze) in your child's nose nor allow him to pick at the clot or cough forcefully for the next 48 hours, Dr. Dolojan advises.

Are probiotic drinks really healthy? By Kaye Langit-Luistro

Loaded with live lactobacilli, probiotic drinks are claimed to aid digestion, thus keeping upset tummies at bay. Studies also show probiotics balance out the presence of bad bacteria in the intestines and churn out antibodies in return.

Though established reports are still unavailable at this time, Edgardo M. Bondoc, MD, a gastroenterologist and director of the Institute of Digestive Diseases at St. Luke's Medical Center in Quezon City, admits that probiotics are especially helpful to those who have bacterial overgrowth, diarrhea, received a course of antibiotics, and even inflammation of the colon.

Still, what puzzles even the most ardent of probiotic drinkers is this: how much should you consume daily? For preventive purposes, studies show that a reasonable dose would be 4 billion organisms everyday. This translates to half a container, considering the fact that most drinks have approximately 8 billion lactobacilli per 80 ml canister. But for therapeutic purposes-fighting an intestinal infection or coping with an illness- you can take between 5 and 10 billion organisms, two to three drinks a day.

Get the Lactobacillus Fix by Kaye Langit-Luistro
Prevention Magazine Philippines, 2002

But Dr. Bondoc says you do not need to follow this guideline to the letter. The fact remains that probiotics are not miracle cures to everything that ails you.

These products hardly have any side effects as long as you do not overindulge. Simply remember to keep probiotic drinks refrigerated between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius to keep friendly organism alive. "Just follow the manufacturer's instructions for optimum results," Dr. Bondoc advises.

Food Musings: A Look At Takoyaki's History & Tamayaki Philippines' Delish Takoyaki ♪♪♪

$

"When life gives you wheat flour, make Takoyaki."

Japan literally gave our favorite lemon quote a new twist and revolutionized Asian food culture as we know it today.

During two extremely difficult times in history, namely the Tokyo Earthquake of 1932 and the aftermath of World War II, rice was scarce and the Japanese turned to flour to satisfy their hunger. They made batter-based dishes topped with special sauces to survive with flair.

Even as Japan came back from the ruins, locals didn't discard this flour-based food rather tried hard to improve on it. As life became much better, the Japanese added more ingredients like eggs, meat and seafood into the mix.

Four uniquely tasting batter-based dishes came out of Japan's colorful food history:
    • Okonomiyaki - a special kind of grilled egg pancake.
    • Choboyaki -      ball-shaped batter composed of red pickled ginger, green peas, soy sauce and then cooked on a cast-iron griddle.
    • Radioyaki -       slightly larger than choboyaki but made more interesting with the addition of sinewy meat.
    • Takoyaki-       resembling choboyaki but made use of octopus as the primary ingredient.

In 1935, Endo Tomekichi, a street vendor in Osaka wanted to add another dish to his already popular offerings of okonomiyaki and choboyaki. Sparked by the knowledge of a certain akashiyaki (boiled octopus in an eggy batter) a well-loved treat in Akashi located in Hyogo Prefecture, Endo became convinced of incorporating octopus into his new street food menu.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Here in the Philippines, I get my favorite Takoyaki from Tamayaki.

Tamayaki's takoyaki  is simply divine! It is literally crunchy on the outside and significantly plump with an eclectic mix of meat and cabbage on the inside. It is unlike the other takoyaki treats I've tried before which unveiled a gooey residue once I sank my teeth into them.

Tamayaki's version is really all meat which makes for a fulfilling snack. What's extra special are the abundant toppings that add a degree of woodsy nuttyness to an already fantastic snack.

Tamayaki Philippines

That is, of course, if you don't mind adding around Php 60-70 to your usual fare of Mall Cart Takoyaki. But if you do choose to indulge in your craving, you will never go wrong with Tamayaki.

Hmmmm...Which one should I try first?
Tutapel @ Tamayaki Philippines

Many assume that since Tamayaki's lifeline is Takoyaki, the franchise must have started in Japan. On the contrary, the company has traced its roots back in China and in only a little below 3 years, Tamayaki's clout has extended to Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore, Australia, and the Philippines.

Just like Takoyaki's precursors, Tamayaki's Takoyaki has morphed into 12 tasty versions:
      • Tamayaki Seasoned Octopus   Php 115
      • Tamayaki Kani & Shrimp          Php 115

Don't let your body blues get in the way of experiencing maternal bliss. Here's how to have fun during and after pregnancy. By Kaye Langit-Luistro

It sure isn't easy being pregnant. You may look forward to the miracle of life and all that, but sometimes when you look at your protruding belly, darkened skin on the neck and armpits, nasty pimples and skin tags, you can't help but cry.

All these conditions are hormone-related, says Dr. Dorothy Mildred Sia-Cu, diplomate of the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) and consultant at the Manila Doctors Hospital. During pregnancy, hormones such as progesterone, estrogen and prolactin escalate to support your baby's needs. Unfortunately, they can also create havoc on your skin, body and emotions. Wipe the tears from your eyes and fret no more; you can do something about it!

Exercise. An exercise regimen can help reduce skin problems and other discomforts associated with pregnancy. Sia-Cu says that you can benefit much from swimming, walking, cycling and independent action stair-climbing if done for 10 to 15 minutes, 4to 5 times a week.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that the most appropriate form of aerobic exercise for a pregnant woman is the one that she most enjoys and can safely perform. Perform the "talk test" to check against overexertion. If you are able to talk comfortably while exercising, you are doing fine.

Pretty Pregnant by Kaye Langit-Luistro
Moms & Babies Magazine, March-April 2005

Just a week postpartum ( after birth), you can walk, lift weights, even for 10 minutes, says Kathy Kaehler, trainer and co- developer of the workout video Cindy Crawford: A New Dimension. The regimen boasts of exercises that any woman can do before, during and after pregnancy. You have to give your body time to regain strength and shed off unwanted pounds, she says.

Feed on fresh foods.Load up on brown rice, oatmeal and whole wheat bread-food rich in fiber will prevent diarrhea and constipation. Get your share of lean meat, fish, seafood and tons of veggies and fruits. Extra helpings of tuna, salmon, tofu and soy milk will also do you a world of good. Sadly the Filipino diet lacks essential micronutrients, like  omega 3 fatty acids, calcium and iron needed to keep mother and baby healthy, observes Sia-Cu. On the contrary, Japanese staples of fish, rice, steamed veggies and tofu are rich in essential minerals. Japanese women as a result, are confident about their diet, and do not take supplements at all, Sia-Cu claims.

See A Dermatologist.Do not experiment with over-the-counter (OTC) drugs or commercial preparations to cure acne flare-ups. Without proper guidance, your skin condition may worsen. Look for a qualified dermatologist to handle your skin woes.

Wear Flattering Clothes. Just because your pregnant doesn't mean you have to look dowdy. There are plenty of stylish maternity clothes available. Forget about the oversized dresses with huge baby collars and outdated lace. Now, you can wear dark- hip-length tailored blazers or sleeveless shirts paired with spandex pants during your time off from work.

Visit A Spa.Treat yourself to a back rub from a certified massage therapist. Just don't let her touch your tummy to avoid bleeding, premature labor, and other fetal complications, Sia-Cu advises. For tired legs and feet, opt for a foot spa. A basic procedure includes a scrub, massage and even a pedicure. A good spa sterilizes its nail apparatus to prevent infections.

WHAT'S IN YOUR KIKAY KIT?

Who says that only non-preggies can keep one? Having a vanity bag is a good idea, especially during pregnancy. If you like the way you look and feel while on the family way, you help yourself- emotionally and physically- overcome the effects of hormonal changes on your body. Remember, not all women are given the gift of pregnancy. Be proud of your brand new body. Stash these items inside your handbag to keep you feeling radiant and refreshed all day.

Pretty Pregnant by Kaye Langit-Luistro
Moms & Babies Magazine, March-April 2005

Hair treatments.Well-groomed hair is truly a woman's crowning glory. But go easy on it. Studies show that falling hair is a harsh side effect of pregnancy. Opt for mild shampoos, conditioner and hot-oil treatments. Hold the hair coloring until the baby's delivered. Commercial hair colorants have compounds that may harm the growing baby.

Facial products.Your sebaceous glands churn out more oil than usual so you'll need to consult an accredited dermatologist for the right facial products. He will help you find the right face creams and other needed skin treatments. Do not use products with tretinoin, a harmful ingredient to your unborn child.

Body lotion. You may have an oily face but certain parts of your body are dry and scaly. After a weekly body scrub and exfoliation, apply lotion over your skin's dry areas.

Body oil. To minimize the appearance of stretch marks, rub body oil on your tummy, three to four times a day. Medical doctors are divided when it comes to this issue, but experienced moms believe in the beauty benefits oils may bring to your skin.

Make-up.When you are under the weather, just reach for some hypoallergenic face powder, lip gloss, blush, eyebrow pencil and mascara. Voila! A dolled-up face may just bring out your cheery disposition.

Bottled water. You need at least 2 liters of water a day to keep you hydrated so drink up! Adequate water can also decrease symptoms of morning sickness.

Caffeine-free herbal teas. Now that you are pregnant, stay away from caffeinated drinks such as coffee and sodas. Caffeine may rob calcium from the bones making you prone to fractures. Caffeine-free tea is a healthy, soothing option for moms who need more than plain water.

Supplements.Take the right vitamins and supplements. Ask your physician which pills to take at certain stages of pregnancy. As a rule of thumb, folic acid should be taken during the first months of pregnancy, iron during the fourth month of pregnancy and calcium and vitamin A at the start of the second trimester.

Packed veggies and fruits. Strips of carrots with fat-free Caesar salad dressing or sliced apples, oranges and bananas keep you from munching processed chips and sodas.

Portable music player. Slip a small player into your bag. Research shows that listening to the classics soothes frayed nerves and improves the baby's mental health.

Inspiring book.Find a book that feeds your body, soul and spirit to ease feelings of discomfort associated with childbearing. Surf the net to check out what other moms-to-be are reading.

Mini-diary. Keep tabs on your fears, insecurities, hopes an dreams. Sometimes all you need is to express yourself fully-free from judgmental remarks.

Get solutions to your beauty problems during pregnancy. By Kaye Langit-Luistro

You're finally having a baby! What you have been wishing for all these years has finally come true. Congratulations! It's a delightfully new experience. Your body is changing and you love keeping track. But there's something you didn't count on- no matter how faithful you are to your beauty regimen, it doesn't seem to be working.

Freelance writer and mother of 3 Hazel Alviz says it felt like she was losing control of her own body. "I had pimples and falling hair when I was pregnant. I felt fat and ugly. So, I was depressed for a while."

All these conditions are hormone-related. Hormones are chemical secretions of a gland or tissue, triggering them into action. Estrogen, progesterone and prolactin shoot up during pregnancy. Reason: To support the baby's growing needs. Unfortunately, any major changes in hormone levels can create havoc on your skin.

Dark Skin

Darkening of the skin is probably one of the most common problems pregnant women experience. Dark brown patches on the face, known as chloasma or melasma are more pronounced if the skin type is darker. Sun exposure, and oral  contraceptives taken prior to pregnancy usually aggravate it. Joseph L. Ortiz, MD, consultant at the St. Luke's Medical Center, and fellow of Philippine Dermatological Society, however, assures "chloasma is only temporary and eventually disappears after pregnancy. Still, you may encounter darkish and blotchy skin on the neck, armpits and abdomen."

Pigmentation Busters

Unfortunately, such conditions are inevitable during pregnancy. But, here are some suggestions to keep them at bay. Feed your skin with diet rich in fresh foods. Hazel recommends taking plenty of fruits and veggies. "Don't forget to drink lots of water," she adds. Healthy diet flushes toxins our of the body, making your skin clear, bright, and healthy-looking. You can also try applying skin creams and lotions with alpha hydroxy acid or AHA. "AHAs are derived from fruit acids, so they're much safer to use than other preparations. They are peeling agents, so they speed up exfoliation, uncovering the smooth skin beneath," Dr. Ortiz  says.

And if you are uncertain which products to use, or not to use, consult a dermatologist, who are accredited and have undergone 3 years residency program," Dr. Ortiz advises.

Flare-ups

Pimples appear due to an increase in sebum (fat) production in the skin. Dr. Ortiz advises "against the use of tretinoin during pregnancy. Several studies show it may be harmful to the fetus' growth and development."

Face-savers

"Pregnant women can use simple cleansing agents, like soap and water to remove excess oils in the skin. But if you really want to put facial creams, you can use products with AHA derivatives," Dr. Ortiz says.

Hazel agrees "the best antidote is clean skin. I also tell my pregnant buddies, to just grin and bear them, all will return to normal, after birth."

Skin Tags and Darkened Moles

Dr. Ortiz explains, "skin tags or kuntil and darkening of moles are also common among pregnant women." Of you are self-conscious  about them, opt for some make-up tricks. "use hypoallergenic and non-clog poring concealer that matches your skin tone, dabbing it on troubled spots. You can also mix concealer with foundation, then lightly dust some loose powder, Hazel advises.

Survival Secrets
