NOTD: Glitzy Nails By Essence Colour & Go

Essence at Healthy & Beauty, SM Fairview

Nail art has always fascinated me but I'm not so sure on whether I have the skill nor the patience to do it every so often. But with the re-introduction of glitter nail tints last season, I must admit though that I've been seriously considering getting some for they promise gorgeous nails in just minutes.

It was rather timely when my favorite Malaysian blogger Nicolekiss shared some NOTDS in her post about Essence Cosmetics.  What made me shriek for joy was the fact, that this cosmetic line is available at a nearby SM Department Store! That was why during my last mall visit, I decided to grab a couple of nail tints just to try them out.

Essence Color & Go @ Health & Beauty SM FAirview
Php 99/ bottle

My verdict? I'm loving the Essence Nail Tints because of their vivid hues, richly designed brush and very affordable price tag compared to other brands. So you can understand that out of sheer excitement, I started taking these pics even if my nails were still freshly painted. :)

The purple glitter nail polish boasts of an almost transparent shade bespeckled with glitters.
It only appears darker here because I used a more vivid purple shade as base coat.

This is how it looks like when the orange tint is used as base coat
and the purply glitter nail tint as top coat.

My post title says it all. If you've received Tous les Jours Vouchers from Tony Moly Philippines as part of their promo for the month of May, then you only have until today, to claim your free french macaron.

When I realized that the vouchers were about to expire, I readily claimed my freebies a couple of weeks ago from their branch at SM The Block. It was my first time to taste TLJ macarons and I have to say that these confections were really well-thought of.

Tous Les Jours macarons resemble Sinfully's when it comes to texture, but not as sweet, which I regard as a plus factor for TLJ.

I was about to go straight to the counter, when my path was derailed by an array of breads that seemed to call out my name. I can't help but do a double take and before knowing it, I found myself reaching for some of their baked goodies along the way.

Palty Bubble Hair Color Tutorial 101: Trying Out My Palty in Caramel Sauce For The First Time

$

Just before our Boracay trip early last month, I was already contemplating on whether to have my hair dyed in a salon or to proceed to my usual DIY hair coloring. I finally decided to pursue my DIY coloring when I saw the Japanese Bubble Hair Color called Palty during a visit to Watson's SM North-The Annex at one time.

Palty Bubble Hair Color

My Choice: Palty in Yummy Caramel Sauce

See? My roots were obviously showing up and I can't hide them any longer. :-(

Roots, roots, go away!

Up Close with Palty

I was a Palty newbie so I wasn't really familiar with all the stuff found inside the box. Upon closer inspection, however, I was able to distinguish between the base water and the cream which was of course, the lifeline of the whole coloring process.

Allow me to show you what's inside the box:

What's inside the popular Palty Box?

Hair Care Solution (light yellow packet)
Base water
Red Mixing Cup
From left to right: (2nd row)
Palty Coloring Cream

From left to right: (3rd row)
Mixing Spoon
Instruction Leaflet

All Set For the Skin Allergy Test!

Every time I use a new brand, I never fail to undergo the patch test 24 to 48 hours before hair coloring in order to keep any allergies at bay.

If you haven't done the test before, here's a four-fold approach to help guide you:

1.  Prepare the base water in bottle form, cream, plastic cover/saucer with some Q-tips.

Left to right: cream tube, plastic saucer, q-tips, base water bottle

2. Make the test solution by simply squeezing a pea-size amount of cream and placing it onto the plastic container.

3. Add in the same amount of base water onto the cream and mix both substances until they become foamy.

4. Apply the solution onto the underside of the arm. Let it dry and leave for the next 24 or 48 hours. Note: You might see some discoloration during the patch test. If you don't experience any itching or any undesirable skin results, proceed to coloring after the required time period.

Yay! It's Time For Hair Coloring.

After reading the manual, I was able to decipher the correct process on how to prepare and apply the solution correctly.

Allow me to share with you the steps involved:

1.  Make sure to shampoo your hair the day before dyeing to avoid any scalp irritations.

2.  Shake the base water up and down around 20 times before pouring the substance onto the mixing cup.

3.  Mix in the entire contents of the cream with the base water.

Pour the base water and cream onto the mixing cup.

Here's how it looks like.

4.  Stir the mixture until foam develops.

Be careful with the overflow!

5. In case the mixture overflows, which is very likely, transfer the contents onto a bigger container. Begin the coloring right away. Don't worry about the colored beads/specks on the mixture as they won't pose any problem in the resulting hair color.

6.  Start with the roots and divide the hair into sections. Apply a scoopful of foam onto the hair until the whole head is covered with the foamy color mixture.

Palty Bubble Hair Color Tutorial 101:
Leave the mixture on for exactly 15 minutes and 20 minutes for those with thicker hair.

7.  Once waiting time is achieved, wash hair with lukewarm water until color runs clear. Don't forget to shampoo hair and condition it with the special hair color solution included in the box.

8.  Since I have naturally fine hair, I just left the color on for exactly 15 minutes. Here's how it looked like after coloring.

Resulting color after 15 minutes

My Palty in Caramel Sauce well into its 2nd week.

My Thoughts on my Palty Experience:

Upside:
  • I love Palty's rich and vibrant shade.
  • I truly enjoyed using this particular bubble hair color brand for it was very easy to use compared to my normal hair color brand. I didn't have to use any brush nor comb which made the whole process much easier and faster.
  • It only took 15 minutes of waiting time to see my desired shade.
Downside:
  • Although the mixture smelled yummy at first, it exhibited a rather strong scent in the process, which was synonymous to Pagoda Cold Wave Lotion, which I wasn't really fond of.
  • I wasn't expecting that the mixture will overflow during stirring. It was a good thing that I had a plastic container on standby which proved useful in the process.
  • Although I got my desired shade, I can't help but wonder why there were hair sections that were clearly out of sync with the others. Maybe, I wasn't able to section my hair correctly or better yet, since I have long hair, just maybe, one box isn't enough for me.

Will I recommend it?

Most definitely!

Will repurchase?

Certainly.

M & M Bulalohan: A Hole-in-The-Wall Eatery in Tagaytay

When we checked out of Canyon Cove in Nasugbu, Batangas, we were still quite full. But as soon as we reached picturesque Tagaytay, our tummies started growling and grumbling altogether. Within minutes, we saw a series of hole-in-the-wall eateries situated one after another, which seemed too interesting to ignore. After some moments of indecision on which eatery to go to, we finally settled for M & M Bulalohan which claimed to be an expert in whipping up the proverbial Bulalo, among others.

We were greeted by this cute monkey which turned out to be not that lovable considering that it pulled a kid's hair just moments after we arrived. It turned out that the creature was quite notorious for doing these rather annoying things to customers which made me wonder on why there wasn't any warning sign plastered on its cage? Restaurateurs should take the initiative to remove the monkey from its present location or better-yet, if they really want it to be their "official greeter," they should build a better cage to keep any pesky hair-pulling incidents at bay.

M & M Bulalohan: I'm sooo ready to eat!

As expected, the eatery looked fairly simple; but, clean. The plastic, checkered table tops emitted that charming "carinderia feel" which is very much intrinsic in Pinoy food culture. Aside from our family, there was also a bunch of runners who seemed to have been there for quite a while. My sis-in-law Momshie Leng and I started chatting with one of them and since he was very nice, I even asked him for some tips on how we, too, can start our very own running program. Teehee. :-)

After our friendly banter, Momshie Leng and I moved toward the balcony with the lovely Taal Lake & Volcano as a fitting backdrop.

Moi Korean-style

We postponed our photo-ops for later since we were really famished at that point. The family ordered several servings of the following dishes to accommodate our huge appetites. I believe I might have missed a dish or two from our menu that day, but here are the dishes that I've managed to take photos of.

M & M's Trademark Bulalo (Pinoy Beef Marrow Soup). A flavorful mixture of shank and kenchi beef slices, baguio beans, cabbage, corn and pechay. Bulalo is one of my faves growing up because my mom normally cooked this for me during major school exams. I liked the soft, chewy meat but I found the soup to be lacking in flavor. Perhaps an additional sibot (spice mixture), beef bouillon and even sweet potatoes might do the trick. :)

M & M Calamares (Breaded Fried Squid). I found this dish to be really good because it was crunchy and served steaming hot. Even my son Tutapel kept nudging me for a second and third helping.

M & M Pork Sisig. Chopped pig parts, like snout and ears plus a dash of chicken liver were made even richer by the addition of egg, not mayo. The end result was flavorful and quite appetizing.

As far as drinks are concerned, most of us preferred unadulterated coconut juice served in infamous shells for added effect. If only they were served chilled, then it would have been really good.

While the rest of the family were busy talking and dining at the same time, Momshie Leng and her cutie kids RJ and Erika joined Tutapel and myself for this memorable photo-op.

A Tour of Mactan, Cebu In Just 4 Hours?

$
0

Looking back, a four-hour tour of Cebu City was certainly not enough. But since we didn't have the luxury to explore everything listed on the itinerary, we settled for an express tour crafted by our super friendly tour guide/driver. It was a whirlwind trip, just like our Bohol Countryside Tour, wherein we managed to visit 10 sites and even sneaked in some time for souvenir shopping, all in roughly 6 hours.

To some degree, the four-hour Cebu tour gave us a glimpse of Cebu's historical past; but, it could have been so much better if we got a taste of its bustling culture as well via two well-known spots: Zubuchon, famous for its lechon that has led even Anthony Bourdain to call it as "the best pig in the world..." plus Kenneth Cobonpue's Showroom that even Brad Pitt can't ignore.:-)

Driving around Cebu

Allow me to share with you the five major tourist destinations that we managed to squeeze in during our four-hour tour of Mactan Island in Cebu.

1. Lapu-Lapu Shrine

Through several talks/seminars on Philippine History conducted at Crossroad 77, I've begun to see our national heroes in a different light. For the longest time, they were robbed of their honor for some writers have twisted the truth to make it appear that our ancestors were primitive, barbaric and devoid of any cultural tradition. Let's take for instance the case of Lapu-Lapu whose real name may have been Kalipulaku, if only, the Italian scholar Antonio Pigafetta spelled the name right.

Contrary to popular belief, Datu Kalipulaku was then a brave and honorable native chief of Mactan when the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his men first stepped foot on Zubu (Pigafetta's spelling for Cebu). Several history books have been terribly unkind to Lapu-Lapu when he was portayed as a war freak who killed the Spaniard out of sheer boredom.

What actually happened was that Magellan and his 27 Spanish commanders and crew of the galleons Trinidad, Concepcion and Victoria raped the 50 virgins of Cebu! That repulsive act provoked the Datu to kill the Spaniard and his men during a banquet on April 27, 1521. It was actually an acrimonious cry for retribution on how these foreigners trampled on our women's honor; and, most certainly not just as a random killing spree for cultural domination.

Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Mactan, Cebu

Truly, a hero of this magnitude deserves a memorial that transcends time and generations. But when I saw the statue up close, my heart was torn into pieces. I saw several traces of cracked stones and chipped paint which confirmed circulating reports that the bronze used in the sculpture was not first-rate. I can't help but compare how we Pinoys take our monuments for granted when our Japanese counterparts spend millions in restoring their temples, just like in the case of the Kiyomizudera (Kiyomizu Temple) in Kyoto.

Lapu-Lapu Shrine in Mactan, Cebu

Although the Lapu-Lapu Shrine has been featured in a number of TV programs and blogs, what the public usually fails to see is the land surrounding the famed monument. The undeveloped area around the shrine can't help but add a sour note to its already depressing state.

Undeveloped area creates an even depressing tone to the Lapu-Lapu Shrine

2. Magellan Shrine

Just a few meters away from the Lapu-Lapu Shrine is the MagellanMonument. For me, it's deeply ironic that  despite Magellan's crimes, for some reason, a large memorial tower was still put up to honor him.

3. Fort San Pedro

Otherwise known as Fuerza de San Pedro, Fort San Pedro was considered an important military bastion during the Spanish regime. Spanish as well as indigenous Cebuano laborers were tapped by Miguel López de Legazpi and the Spanish Government in Cebu at the time.

Today, with just a Php 10 entrance pass, anyone can enter this once mighty fortress. It's surprising to know that despite its meager fees, last year alone, according to Sun Star Cebu, the fort was able to generate Php 9 million worth in revenues.

The site though beautiful, badly needed some form of restoration. It's a good thing that Fort San Pedro Executive Director Erwin dela Cerna "is pushing for a P10-million facelift for the 275-year-old facility," Sun Star Cebu writes.

4. Magellan's Cross

Placed inside a chapel on the busy Magallanes Street, Magellan's Cross was flocked by a sturdy flow of visitors from the time of our arrival. There were those who were busy snapping photos while a handful prayed intently in front of the cross. Although quite imposing in photos, I was rather surprised to see that the cross itself wasn't as huge as I expected it to be.

It turned out that the actual cross used by Magellan was encased inside the wooden cross as shown right here. This was done to protect it from being vandalized by eager visitors waiting for a chance to chip off some parts as souvenirs.

Magellan's Cross in Cebu

Historians say that Magellan's Cross marks the entry of Catholicism in the Philippines because of the arrival of the Portuguese explorer in Cebu. Even "the King Humabon of Cebu and his queen, son and daughters with some 800 of their subjects were baptized into the Catholic faith by Father Pedro Valderrama."

5. Tabo-an Public Market

To cap our  four-hour tour, we decided to buy some pasalubong (gifts/treats) at the popular Tabo-an Public Market. An array of dried fish welcomed us and our senses feasted on this one-of-a-kind food fest set before us. The market featured a series of stores that you can choose from depending on the type of pasalubong you're looking for.

So Near And Yet So Far: How I Finally Scored Hokkaido Ramen Santouka's Trademark Ramen ♪♪♪♪♪

$

If you can believe it, my craving for ramen further intensified when my favorite Japanese Documentary Program (Japan Videos) featured the Ramen Museum in Yokohama. Oh, I can still remember every detail of that particular episode. From its historical past to its iconic spot in Japanese food culture, ramen was put into the spotlight like never before. Moving pictures of people enjoying different ramen varieties inside the museum juxtaposed with videos of ramen- in- the making was enough to make my mouth water and look for the nearest ramen shop.

Rewind (2011).

I started my search by googling the different shops found at the Ramen Museum and tried to find out if by any chance, we have a branch here in the Philippines. That was when I came across Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. For some reason, I've begun to associate the shop with the Ramen Museum although I wasn't really sure whether HRS even had a branch there or not. I was drawn to a spectrum of rave reviews about the shop that I became fixated on it. I was disappointed though that back in 2011, there wasn't a Philippine branch to even talk about.

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka @ Tokyo Street, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

However, my hope rose when I learned that there was a Hokkaido Ramen Santouka in nearby Kuala Lumpur which happened to be on our travel list that year. You can just imagine how excited I was when I finally stepped on Malaysian soil. Aside from all the bright lights and interesting sights the city was known for, I was equally ecstatic to get a taste of that ramen from Hokkaido Ramen Santouka.

However, I reserved the best for last by scheduling a visit on our last day at KL. I wanted it to be my last memory of the city! So when the whole family decided to have breakfast at Espressamente illy Pavilion KL, I decided not to eat anything because I wanted it to be a feast when I finally got to dine at HRS.

I could still remember telling Bala and Tutapel to hurry because I didn't want to be caught in the long queue. I remember running in front of my boys towards the 6th floor of  Pavilion Kuala Lumpur! Well, I guess, that was how excited and famished I was. :)

Gorgeous Tokyo Street on the 6th Floor of  Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

But my excitement was replaced by disappointment when I found out that the shop was still closed and we needed to wait for another hour before it actually opened. That was of course an impossibility, because we needed to make it to the LCCT-KLIAirport on time. All I could do was to take this last picture, and mutter "I Love You Goodbye" with a heavy heart.

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka @ Tokyo Street, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Fast Forward (2013).

Much later, I found out that Hokkaido Ramen Santouka opened its very first shop in Glorietta 4 during the first quarter of 2013. But it was only recently that I finally got to try HRS's Trademark Ramen. My pretty, K-POPified friend Cel and I dashed to its Mall of Asia branch right before we watched Lee Min Ho's My Everything Concert at the nearby Arena. We regarded it as a double celebration of sorts. :-)

Tokusen Toroniku Ramen (Shio Flavor).
Along with Mars Cel, I ordered the small-sized ramen which proved to be just enough to whet my appetite. I was told that Shio (Salt) was their bestselling flavor and I couldn't agree more. At first, I didn't expect that a simple sea-salt infused ramen can evoke so much depth of flavor. Oh, I was proven wrong. The milky-white soup was indeed deeply flavorful, tasty and extremely delish which made me enjoy the ramen's chewy nature even more. And the Roasted Pork Cheeks, you may ask? They were unbelievably soft, salty and oh sooo good! For me, the dish showed me the height of ramen because of its strong visual appeal and the fact that the soup was harmonized beautifully with all the ingredients marked with the lovely addition of the Pork Cheeks.

When I saw the info card placed near the counter, I can't help but recall a similar one found at Gong Cha. Sharetea's however didn't delve on the appreciation of milk teas in general, but provided a small campaign on how to fully enjoy their Rock-Salt Cheese Drinks in particular.

Here's how:

Step 1:    Using the provided small plastic knife, cut the sealing plastic about 3 cm in length on the border of the cup.

Step 2:   Cut another small hole on the other side of the sealing plastic for better air flow.

Step 3:   Sip the drink to taste both the rock-salt cheese cream on top and  the tea at the bottom.

 Sharetea Boracay

Since all the tea variants sounded so good, Bala and I always had a tough time choosing which ones to get. Somehow we managed to score some of their bestsellers during our three consecutive visits.

Ice Blended Tarowith Pudding.
Oozes with just the right amount of creaminess and sweetness. The addition of pudding provides the drink with a lot more texture making it a notch more enjoyable. What sets it apart from the other taro drinks I had before, is its more elegant taste, which stems I think, from the quality of the ingredients used. A definite must-try!

Rock Salt Cheese with Cocoa.
A wonderful interplay ofsaltiness, sweetness and creaminess. Sharetea's version is definitely a lot sweeter and milder than Happy Lemon's which makes it a better alternative to those with a sweet tooth.

 Sharetea Boracay

Right: Rock Salt Cheese with Cocoa (reg: Php 90  Large: Php 100)

No.1 Taiwan Classic Pearl Milk Tea.
The mixture provides just the right amount of milk and brewed tea mixture which makes it an ideal choice for those who want a somewhat stronger kick.

Ice Blended Strawberry with Lychee de Coco.
A very refreshing sweet tart drink mixed with some lychee coco bits. By far, this is my favorite from the four variants. A definite thumbs up!

BITE CLUB GRILLED BURGERS

Bite Club Grilled Burgers Boracay

Situated just beside Sharetea, is the popular burger joint called Bite Club Grilled Burgers. Based on all the reviews in the netI had high hopes that this particular joint will indeed blow me away. When I stood right there looking at their menu, I knew exactly what to order based on blogger recommendations.

Menu of Bite Club Grilled Burgers Boracay

Potato Wedges.

For some reason, Bite Club's wedges taste almost the same as KFC's signature fries. Not that it's a bad thing, for I like both selections in equal degrees. Bite Club's potato wedges bear that adorable crispness and saltiness inherent in properly cooked fries. The additional use of herbs and spices gives out a smoky flavor that is both interesting and fulfilling. It is indeed a great partner to Bite Club's Grilled Burgers.

Potato Wedges (Php 75) @ Bite Club Grilled Burgers Boracay

Club Burger with Blue Cheese Cream.

Although tasty and flavorful in its own way, this particular burger didn't quite reach my expectations. For some reason, I thought that it was going to be as fulfilling as Blues Brothers from Brothers Burger, considering that both burgers have similar blue cheese toppings. But unfortunately, it wasn't love at first bite.

Club Burger (Php 165) @ Bite Club Grilled Burgers Boracay

Burgerella with Blue Cheese Cream.

This particular mozzarella-stuffed burger is more to my liking. The burger's smoky flavor combined with the varying textures of the mozzarella and blue cheese cream bring new meaning to the word comfort food.

Burgerella (Php 185) @ Bite Club Grilled Burgers Boracay

And for us, the perfect pairing to Bite Club Grilled Burgers is Sharetea. Aside from the fact, that each joint is conveniently situated within a few meters from each other, their products when combined well, will make just about everyone jump for joy. :)

Into the Uniquely Organic Vibe at Bohol Bee Farm

$

Barely two months ago, the whole family went back to Bohol for a reunion of sorts. Clearly, Bohol is one of those places you'll never get tired of visiting, over and over again. So you can understand our anguish when we found out about the terrible quake that hit Bohol recently which literally shook the very foundation of this once idyllic region. We can only pray that in time, Boholanos will find the strength to rebuild their beautiful province.

We truly hope that Bohol Bee Farm, one of the tourist spots we went to, wasn't affected that much. For many years, this place has become very popular for its organic dishes, unique ice cream flavors and honey products made available in their in-house resto and souvenir shop.

Welcome to Bohol Bee Farm!

It turned out that Bohol Bee Farm was also a resort. However, we didn't express much interest in the accommodations aspect because our primary objective was to try their food!

The Family with Tito Hormigita @ Bohol Bee Farm

But it didn't stop us from exploring the farm as a wonderful prelude to the main aria: Late Lunch! On our way to the resto, we saw a plethora of herbs that looked so inviting and happy! :) If only plants could speak, then they would probably have promoted themselves just so we can fully experience their healing benefits.

Herbs For Sale @ Bohol Bee Farm

When I saw the Herb Garden, I thought that having something like this in our own backyards will truly add some zest to home-cooked meals. Just imagine, freshly picked herbs, either mixed in or sprinkled on every dish can rival any recipe from a Martha Stewart Cookbook! :)

Momshie Leng & my niece Erika @ Bohol Bee Farm

Adjacent to the Herb Garden was a significantly wide hut filled with all sorts of handicraft products reminiscent of those being made at Ilog Maria Bee Farm, a tourist spot in Cavite which is also popular for its handicrafts and organic products .

Bohol Bee Farm Crafts & Livelihood Program

When I saw these wooden looms, I can't help but be reminded of similar tools used at the Easter Weaving Room in Baguio, another tourist destination known for its indigenous textiles and handicrafts.

Wooden Looms @ Bohol Bee Farm

Textile Weaves @ Bohol Bee Farm

Aren't they bee-a-u-ti-ful? Good news! These handicraft items are being sold at the Souvenir Shop found inside the farm.

Handicrafts @ Bohol Bee Farm

Alas, it's time for the main event: My Birthday Lunch! :) Well, in essence, it was really a super duper late lunch considering our 3:30 PM arrival. Setting that particular detail aside, I was really ecstatic to be there, just two days after my birthday. It's not every year that I get to celebrate this particular life event in such an outstanding way, so I was really thankful to the Lord for such a wonderful gift.

Pathway to the resto

When we finally found the resto, we felt like the place was specially reserved just for us. :)

It turned out that most of the visitors that afternoon opted to dine in the balcony with the beach as a lovely backdrop!

The Kulet Gang @ Bohol Bee Farm

The hot weather though led us to settle on one of the long tables adjacent to the balcony.  There, we were given menus covered by multi-colored textile weaves with the words BOHOL BEE FARM imprinted on them. It took us more than 15 minutes to complete our order because we didn't quite know which ones to choose.

Family Time @ Bohol Bee Farm

Allow me to share with you some of the dishes we tried that lovely afternoon.

Complimentary Squash Bread with Mango & Pesto Spreads.
Sweet, tasty bread made even yummier when paired with the mango & pesto spreads. Great news! This particular bread and spread variants are available at Bohol Bee Farm's Souvenir Shop called The Buzz Shop.

Bohol Bee Farm

Complimentary Cab Cab with Pesto and Green tomatoes.
Relatively crunchy cab cab served with a zesty dip. It is a rather polarizing snack, if you ask me, because of its unique taste and texture.

Bohol Bee Farm

Halang Halang Soup (A La Carte: Single Order- Php 260. Family Size: Php 680).
Reminiscent of another popular pinoy dish called tinola, Halang Halang Soup however prides itself by simmering the chicken in coconut water mixed in with some ginger, bell peppers, lemon grass, coconut meat, sayote, upo, patola, radish and malunggay leaves. Bohol Bee Farm's version of this classic Boholano dish was very flavorful, zesty and boast of a light consistency which I think worked well with the the inherent nature of the dish. I can't say that I fell in love with it; but, at least, it became one of my faves that afternoon, next to the bread 'n' spreads.

Bohol Bee Farm

Organic Garden Salad (Free in every rice meal. A La Carte: Single Order Php 190. Family Size: Php 680).
A fusion of romaine lettuce, radish, turnips, mustard greens and indigenous flowers drizzled in honey mustard dressing. Surprisingly delish flower salad without a hint of bitterness. Worth raving about!

My Fave: Organic Garden Salad @Bohol Bee Farm

Baked Spare Ribs. (A La Carte: Around Php 260)
Flavorful meat served with red rice topped with sweet potato (camote) bits and garden salad on the side. I loved the addition of camote for it provides the rice with a much needed sweetness.

Bohol Bee Farm

Garlic Shrimps. (A La Carte: Php 400)
Another tasty dish but not quite outstanding in my opinion. But still, I love shrimps so I am still pretty much pleased with the dish.

Bohol Bee Farm

Grilled Squid. (A La Carte Php 300)
Although not worth raving about, the not-so-greasy squid proves to be the perfect choice for those trying to control their cholesterol levels.

Bohol Bee Farm

Honey Glazed Chicken. (A La Carte: Php 260)
Cassava Lumpia. (A La Carte: Php 200).
Tasty but not quite impressive, the lumpia and chicken can be ordered separately or as a meal depending on your preference. Most kids and adults alike might have a better time if you order white rice topped with camote bits though.

Bohol Bee Farm

Instead of ordering ice cream at the resto, we opted to go to the Ice Cream Station located near the farm entrance.

The Buzz offers 10 unique ice cream flavors: Pandan, Spicy Ginger, Ube, Malunggay, Mango, Chocolate, Buko, Tomato, Avocado and Buko. Bloggers rave about the Bohol Bee Farm Ice Cream and we were excited to find out whether that claim was really true or not.

The Verdict? Their ice cream was super creamy, astoundingly tasty and so worth the calories! :) I also loved the fact that cab cab was used as a cone because it slowed down the melting process. As for the flavors, we loved Spicy Ginger, Tomato and Malunggay the best. One scoop cost Php 60 and Php 80 for two scoops. To-go-ice cream is also available for Php 120 when placed in a paper bowl, Php 160 for 1 pint and Php 380 for a half gallon. It would be a sin to leave the resort/resto without tasting The Buzz Ice Cream. :)

Bohol Bee Farm: More Fun In The Philippines

My Tips:

  • Don't expect the dishes at Bohol Bee Farm to be impressive. Remember: People don't go there just for the food but for the over-all dining experience of being close to nature.
  • For the buffet lunch/dinner, the resto offers the following dishes: Organic Garden Salad; Cab Cab with Pesto Sauce; Seafood Soup; Grilled Marlin; Honey Glazed Chicken; Baked Spare Ribs; Seafood Lasagna,; Red Rice; One round of Ice Cream and Lemongrass Juice. Buffet dishes are not refillable. Price per head is Php 550 plus 10% service charge.
  • Don't leave the farm without tasting its trademark ice cream.
  • Hire a tour guide for just Php 20 per person so that you can see the Bee Farm up close. Tours are only up to 4:30 PM.
  • If you're visiting as a group, better hire a van rather than the trike to cut costs. Your hotel/resort might be able to arrange some form of transportation for a fee or if this option is not possible, better call up Ramil of Bohol Rent A Car to solve this issue. To go back to your hotel/resort, opt for the service provided by Bohol Bee Farm for an affordable price.

Science Musings at The Mind Museum @ Taguig

Marie Curie was right when she said, "Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less."

Believe it or not, there was a time when Science was my favorite subject in school. Perhaps it was because I had good grades even if I didn't study that much.Smiling Smiley Face But as lessons progressed, I found myself grasping for answers. In time, my love for science turned to fear. Fear that no matter what I did, I can't seem to get the principles as easily as before. What I didn't know at the time was that I was just undergoing a learning plateau, and the only solution was to "embrace the discomfort and move forward."*

I began applying this particular principle in my late twenties as I tried hard to make sense of my career and life in general. In time, I reaped the rewards and began to see the favorable change in me from the inside out. But it was never an easy journey.

Now that I'm a mom, you can't blame me if I want to shield my son from life's difficulties as much as I can. However, I also know that if I don't prep him for the challenges ahead, then I'm only setting him up for destruction. Life will never be easy. And the sooner he realizes it, the better his chances of conquering himself and life in general.

In a small way, I began teaching my son about the value of "embracing the discomfort and moving forward" in his reading. The joyful thing is, in just a little over a year since he learned phonics in school, he can now read paragraphs with ease, including the English subtitles of my favorite Korean Dramas. Smiling Smiley Face

Aside from reading, I also want Bebe Tutapel to fall in love with science and remain passionate about it. Only by allowing him to be constantly exposed to its many wonders can I help bring this dream to reality.

You can understand my elation when I learned that my son's preschool scheduled an educational tour of The Mind Museum recently. I expected to see an impressive, world-class facility and that was exactly what I experienced and so much more. To be honest, I felt like I was at the National Museum of Singapore sans the paintings of course, for TheMind Museum evoked a similar classy and sophisticated ambiance. I can't help but tell myself, "Ang sossy! Pinag-isipan talaga!"

I might have been impressed, but did the preschoolers think the same way? Allow me to answer that question while walking you through the many contraptions and interactive displays found at the four designated galleries; namely, EARTH, ATOM, UNIVERSE and TECHNOLOGY.

When we finally saw it, boy, were we impressed! Even Bebe Tutapel who disliked striking a pose, generously offered several k-popified moves for the photo-op. Unfortunately though, we can't seem to sneak our way in front of it without bumping into a bunch of equally excited kids.

In 1543, Nicolaus Copernicus introduced a conflicting theory that it was not the earth, but the sun as the true center, and all the planets, comets, asteroids and moons revolve around it. Instead of being celebrated, the theory received massive opposition but further experiments and discoveries have since proven the Copernican theory to be true after all.

Bangon PH: 4 Ways To Share Our Love To The Victims of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan)

As the world copes with the initial shock of how the super typhoon Yolanda has devastated, damaged and displaced the people of Leyte and other surrounding provinces, now more than ever, us, Pinoys, living here in the Philippines, should take it upon ourselves to continue helping our kababayan (countrymen) until they have the strength to rise again.

It shouldn't be a one time giving. Rather it should be something that we should commit to, at least up to the next three years, enough time to see some form of change in the lives and livelihood of those who are still fighting to survive amid the devastation, either by choice or the lack of financial resources for relocation.

It doesn't matter how much we give, what matters is that we give from our hearts and we do so consistently. Childish as it may seem to some, but I still believe that the God who multiplied the child's offering of five loaves and two fish as accounted in the four gospels, is raring to bless our gifts of love and sacrifice, in order to let our countrymen know that He hasn't forgotten them nor has He forsaken them (Hebrews 13:5).

Through several agencies, media organizations and ministries, we can extend our love to the Yolanda Victims in 4 ways.

Just this week, our family tried the New Red Ribbon Black Forest Cake.  At first, I didn't know exactly what's new about it. Is it the design, a brand new promo perhaps?

Tutapel with the New Red Ribbon Black Forest Cake

I was indeed pretty excited to try the cake for it has always been a favorite part of our Christmas celebrations. Honestly though, I wasn't expecting Tutapel to like it too. He is more into the no-frill chocolate cakes as expected from kids his age.

Tutapel with The New Red Ribbon Black Forest Cake

The New Red Ribbon Black Forest Cake

I gave hubby Bala a slice and then got another one for me. Before eating it, I gave just a sliver to Tutapel because I knew he wasn't fond of the cake. Imagine my surprise when he asked for a second and third helping until such a time that the slice was all gone! Curious about my son's sudden change of heart, I got myself another slice and started sinking my teeth into its soft, moist chiffon cake.

I was actually amazed that the cake was waaay chocolatier and had a more toned down rum flavor than the one I had last year. No wonder, Tutapel can't get enough of the new cake version! The chocolate shavings and chocolate filling were also worth raving about. In fact, our greatest problem was how to stop ourselves from devouring all those yummylicious choco shavings before the cake turned into something terribly unrecognizable. :-)

I can't wait for my other family members to get a taste of The New Red Ribbon Black Forest Cake!

Into the Traditional Ramen Culture at Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen SM Aura Premier ♪♪♪♪

Bonifacio Global City is steadily garnering a reputation as a mecca of good food, thanks in part to the vast array of restaurant franchises in the area. Foodies like myself, consider this a glorious development to whet one's appetite and satisfy a plethora of cravings. And if you find yourself yearning for authentic Japanese Ramen in the area, I can think of nothing better than Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen.

Ikkoryu is a part of the Yamagoya Ramen Family which boasts of over a hundred restos in Japan, including their hometown of Fukuoka, Tokyo and Osaka, among others. Worldwide, Ikkoryu Ramen has over 150 restos in Taiwan, Thailand, China and most recently, the Philippines.

At its SM Aura Premier branch, for instance, I was impressed by Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen's attention to detail as depicted in its exotic wood plank walls behind an immense glass panel window.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen SM Aura Premier

More wood planks were found inside which somehow made the traditional welcome greeting of Irrashaimase twice as loud. Smiling Smiley Face  After the initial shock, however, my eyes became fixated on this covelike seating area for its creativity and classy vibe.

Wood Planks provide a more intimate setting @
Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen SM Aura Premier

An even more stunning set of wood planks are found inside
@ Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen SM Aura Premier

Up close, the wood planks have something written on them which acording to Mr. Kenji Komuro, Public Relations Director of Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen Philippines, was the opening sentence of Hōjōki, a popular essay in Japanese Literature written by Kamo no Chomei during the Kamakura Period (1185-1333). Known as Account of HutorThe Ten Foot Square Hut  in English, the short work talks about the many disasters faced by the people of  Kyoto at the time.

Primarily considered as a form of Zuihitsu  because of its adherence to the concept of loosely connected personal essays and fragmented ideas relating to the author's surroundings, in this case Chomei's, the writings on these wood planks, when translated to English mean this:

"The current of the flowing river does not cease, and yet the water is not the same water as before. The foam that floats on stagnant pools, now vanishing, now forming, never stays the same for long. So, too, it is with people and dwellings of the world." (Translated by Chambers)

Impressive Calligraphy @
Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen SM Aura Premier

Renowned Japanese artist Ms. Sensyu Yasuko traveled here to the Philippines just so, she can do the calligraphy on each of the wood planks displayed at all Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen shops.

Renowned Calligrapher Sensyu Yasuko at work

I've always been fascinated by the art and science of Japanese Calligraphy ever since I attended a calligraphy class in Tokyo many years ago. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life, as I got a taste of Japanese culture through a seemingly simple partnership of a brush and an ink.

Got so self-conscious when our Japanese Team Leaders started looking at my work!

Aside from the shop's calligraphy, I can't help but smile when I saw this section designed for solo diners as it exuded that traditional ambiance distinct in Japanese Ramen Houses from years ago.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen specializes in Tonkotsu-based broth  made out of pork bones, fat and collagen boiled over low heat for more than 12 hours. To provide structure to the milky white broth are Chikuhou noodles known for their thinness and chewier nature.

Ajitama Tonkotsu (Php 380).

An undeniable bestseller for its milky broth infused with firm Chikuhou noodles, thick-slices of Chasyu (roasted pork), bamboo shoots, black fungus mushroom, a melt-in-your-mouth Aji-Tamago (soft-boiled egg) topped with spring onions and served with nori (dried seaweed).

I found this tonkotsu type flavorful, a little bit salty but certainly without the zing which made me like it even more. Although the Chasyu  wasn't as tasty as the one I had at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka, I think that Ikkoryu's version worked well with its already savory Tonkotsu and very chewy Chikuhou noodles.  A definite must-try!!!

Rediscovering the foodie in me!

Yuzu-Tama Tonkotsu (Php 380).

What set this tonkotsu-type from the first, was the presence of yuzukosyo known for its disarmingly zesty nature. If I were to rate this particular Tonkotsu's pungency level with 5 as the highest, I'll definitely give it a 4.5.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen SM Aura Premier

It was really that spicy but still undeniably delish and appetizing. Best enjoyed with a dash of sesame seeds to tone down the ramen's heat level.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen SM Aura Premier

Special Vegetable Paste Tonkotsu (Php 380).

In between sips of Barley Tea in order to neutralize the palate, I was given a serving of our third type of tonkotsu ramen embellished with an expert fusion of vegetable paste and aromatic oil. The broth was tasty, exhibited a deep pepper flavor and a bit oilier than the first two which I think was really inevitable, considering this particular tonkotsu's primary ingredients.

Special Vegetable Paste Tonkotsu @ Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen

Spicy Tobanjan Tonkotsu (Php 380).

Despite a generous serving of zesty tobanjan paste, the resulting broth was not at all spicy but amazingly flavorful and deeply satisfying. Every little ingredient worked for this ramen and even the addition of  pickled ginger added another interesting dimension to it. A first-rate tonkotsu in my book!

Spicy Tobanjan Tonkotsu @ Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen

Gyoza (Php 150).

No Japanese-style meal will be complete without gyoza, a popular dish originally of Chinese descent; but, has become strongly associated with Japanese food for the longest time. Made up of pork, cabbage, green onions, sake, sesame oil, among others, wrapped in a special type of dough, gyoza is first steamed and then grilled, according to Mr. Komuro.

Ikkoryu's gyoza was sooo good! The dough's crispness worked well with the filling's flavorful nature. I think that Shinjuku Ramen's trademark gyoza considered by many to be the best in town, has found a rival in Ikkoryu's.

Gyoza @ Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen

Karaage (Php 180).

I've never tried Japanese-style fried chicken before or if I had, maybe it wasn't that impressive enough to leave a mark in my memory. I guess the best way to define Ikkoryu's Karaage is to compare it to other fried chicken dishes in town. Ikkoryu's was almost as crisp as Bonchon's minus the sweetness and almost as flavorful as Max's trademark chicken. What's quite remarkable was that even though I ate the chicken almost 15 minutes after it was served, the chicken was still notably crisp and the meat, still juicy. Even without the slaw and mayo, I still quite enjoyed my fried chicken.

Tickled Pink by Pinkberry's Signature FroYo @ SM Aura Premier ♪♪♪♪

The FroYo Wave may have subsided a little, but for a number of reasons, Pinoys still find themselves happily indulging in FroYo's signature sweet 'n' tangy concoctions time and time again.

Pinkberry Philippines (SM Aura Premier)

For one, FroYo is believed to be much healthier than its ice cream counterpart which of course, remains a debatable issue for some. Healthy  maybe FroYo's middle name, but what gravitates people toward it, is its distinctly refreshing taste, ever evolving yogurt flavors  and a plethora of decadent toppings to choose from. Nothing could be better than that!

Pinkberry Philippines

When my food review at Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen wrapped up, I met up with hubby Bala and kulet boy Tutapel to get some desserts. Just a few steps from Ikkoryu was Pinkberry, one of the pioneers of Frozen Yogurt in the world.

Although Pinkberry was first conceptualized in 2005 in West Hollywood, California, it took them 6 years before their first store opened here in the Philippines. For some, their timing was a little bit off. Aside from the fact that Red Mango was dominating the FroYo Craze in the metro, another wave was emerging- the public's fascination with Milk Tea!

Time may not have been Pinkberry's biggest ally, but "word of mouth" is. Customers psyched up by their yogurt varieties and delectable toppings used social media to share their pent up elation. I can't help but share their enthusiasm!

Pinkberry is really something to rave about. It features more yogurt flavors and definitely more chocolate toppings than Red Mango. But what Pinkberry doesn't have which remains to be Red Mango's strength is blueberry jam which just about balances the yogurt's tartness in all levels.

Pinkberry Philippines SM Aura Premier Branch

Setting that detail aside, we still enjoyed Pinkberry's Signature FroYo in 3 delightful combos:

Salted Caramel with Three Toppings (Php 155).
Pinkberry's own take in Salted Caramel FroYo was made richer and two notches more decadent with the addition of toasted almonds, shaved Belgian milk chocolate and yogurt chips. Truly a must-try!

Pinkberry Philippines

Original Flavor with 3 Toppings (Php 155).
The tangy yogurt flavor was beautifully balanced by the nutty Fudge brownie bites, crunchy semi-sweet chocolate chips and enticing shaved Belgian milk chocolate. Another winning combo in my book!

Pinkberry Philippines

Original Flavor with 3 Toppings (Php 155).
Pinkberry's trademark FroYo in original flavor was made three notches more tangy with toasted almonds, kiwi and blueberries. This might be the store's most popular combo, according to one of the staff members, but I wasn't particularly fond of it at all. Just maybe if I added a smooth liquid topping and some cheesecake bites instead, the resulting taste could have been more harmonious than it actually was.

Pinkberry Philippines

Any which way, I can't wait to go back to Pinkberry and try out their other yogurt flavors and sinfully good add-ons.

How about you, what's your favorite Pinkberry concoction?

Why I Love the 2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner! ♪♪♪♪

Viviamo, maker of the popular Belle de Jour Power Planner, has sent me their newest planner for review.  Like I've mentioned last year, I consider this an exceptional item made for women, by women.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

It makes sense, right? When it comes to knowing a woman's intricately unique set of needs, hopes and dreams, only fellow bellas can truly understand and address these concerns effectively. Once again, this year's BDJ Power Planner takes these issues to heart and adds a bit more.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

For one, I've noticed that the 2014 Belle de Jour Power Planner is a few inches smaller than last year's. It is neither too big nor too bulky which makes it a lot easier for us, bellas, to slip it into our handbags.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

And since the 2014 BDJ Planner is almost as small as my iPad Mini, I might even consider taking the planner with me wherever I go.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

Fact is, no matter how convenient the Calendar app in my iPad is, for some amazing reason, nothing beats old-fashioned note-taking sometimes. Perhaps that's the reason why most women are still drawn to buying planners amid the ever increasing allure of digital technology.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

Although the 2014 BDJ Planner boasts of a smaller size, it still sizzles with an array of our favorite features from last year's such as the Goals Page, BDJ Checklist, Random Thoughts, Menstrual Tracker, Bills & Cash Flow Tracker, Vacation Planner and of course, the Weekly Planner.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

Dream board is still included but with a zesty new twist. Instead of just jotting down your wishes, you are encouraged to cut photos that best represent your deepest dreams, and make a collage out of them.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

Fun and informative reads mark the start of each month which allow us to re-assess our personal, professional and even financial commitments.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

And of course, the Php 40,000 worth of coupons from partner establishments are still there to further spice up the 2014 BDJ Planner!

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner Coupons

More coupons are found inside the Power Planner thanks to the following biz partners:

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner Coupons

Aside from the regular features mentioned above, I've noticed that there are also some new additions, making the 2014 BDJ Planner more succinct than it already is.

Here are just some of them:

Compact Monthly Calendar helps us visualize our month-long activities and appointments.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

Choose to Shine Page allows us to analyze and address our fears  head-on.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

Advocacy Challenges Page helps re-awaken the patriot within.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

An Immunization Page keeps track of our vaccines against cervical cancer and the common flu, among others.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

Share Happiness Page drives us outside our comfort zone into caring for our immediate community and our country in general.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

Cutesy Stickers allow us to mark important appointments and qualify them into various themes.

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

All of these well-thought out features are fused together resulting in 200 full-color pages filled with inspiring quotes such as this one:

"Every great dream begins with a dreamer.
Always remember you have within you
the strength, the patience and the passion
to reach for the stars to change the world."
-Harriet Tubman

2014 Belle De Jour Power Planner

I've also noticed that this year's planner delves on how women should live life to the full and make it a masterpiece.

And to answer this pervading question felt all throughout the planner:

"I will make my life a masterpiece by choosing to soar above life's raging storm and use its seemingly frightening wind power to help lift me to greater heights of service and influence."
